Additional Insured Endorsement Pipeline
A specialized additional insured structure applied to pipeline construction, maintenance, or energy infrastructure operations.
Definition
An Additional Insured Endorsement Pipeline refers to the use of an Additional Insured Endorsement within pipeline-related contracts, whereby a pipeline owner, operator, or upstream/downstream project participant is added as an additional insured under a contractor’s General Liability Insurance policy. The endorsement extends liability protection to the designated party for claims arising out of the contractor’s pipeline operations, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of the policy and endorsement form.
Structural Characteristics
- Contractual Requirement: Typically mandated by pipeline service agreements, master service agreements, or right-of-way contracts.
- Endorsement Form: Often implemented using ISO or manuscript forms such as Form CG 20 10 or equivalent language.
- Scope of Coverage: Applies only to liability arising from the named insured’s operations related to pipeline activities.
- Risk Allocation: Functions as part of a broader contractual risk transfer framework.
- Defense and Indemnity Extension: May provide defense and indemnity to the additional insured within policy limits.
Parameters & Conditions
Coverage is limited to claims caused, in whole or in part, by the acts or omissions of the named insured or those acting on its behalf, depending on endorsement wording. Application is commonly restricted to ongoing operations unless completed operations coverage is separately included. Policy limits, primary and noncontributory status, and waiver provisions may be governed by separate endorsements or contractual provisions. Coverage remains subject to exclusions, aggregate limits, and any applicable Completed Operations limitations.
Topic Relationships
Exceptions, Limitations & Boundaries
The endorsement does not create independent coverage beyond the policy’s insuring agreement and does not expand limits beyond those purchased by the named insured. It does not automatically provide coverage for the additional insured’s sole negligence unless explicitly stated in the endorsement language and permitted by applicable law. Coverage may be further limited by pollution exclusions, professional liability exclusions, or energy-specific exclusions within the base policy.
